How to Revise GCSE Business Effectively โ 6-Week Plan
Six weeks is enough time to revise the whole GCSE Business course properly โ if you spend it testing yourself rather than re-reading notes. This plan splits the content into manageable blocks, gives you a simple 45-minute daily routine, and builds up to full timed papers in the final fortnight. It works for OCR J204, AQA 8132 and Edexcel 1BS0.
The three rules that make revision work
1. Active recall. Close the book and write down everything you remember, then check. Retrieving information is what makes it stick โ re-reading feels productive but isn't.
2. Spaced practice. Come back to each topic several times over the six weeks. A short review a few days later beats one long session.
3. Exam questions early. Business is marked on application and evaluation, not just knowledge. Start answering questions in week 1, not week 6.
Your daily 45-minute routine
| Time | What to do |
|---|---|
| 5 min | Warm-up recall: list every key term you remember from yesterday's topic. Check and correct. |
| 15 min | New content: work through one topic from this week's block. Make a one-page summary or knowledge organiser from memory, then fill gaps from your notes. |
| 15 min | Exam questions: answer 2โ3 questions on the topic โ a definition, an explain, and one longer analyse or evaluate question. |
| 10 min | Mark and fix: mark against a mark scheme. Rewrite one weak answer properly. |
The 6-week plan
Week 1 โ Business activity and enterprise
- Purpose of business, enterprise and entrepreneurs, risk and reward, opportunity cost
- Business planning, aims and objectives (SMART targets)
- Forms of ownership: sole trader, partnership, Ltd, plc, franchises, social enterprises
- Stakeholders and conflict between them
End-of-week check: can you explain why a business's objectives change as it grows, using a real example?
Week 2 โ Marketing
- Market research (primary vs secondary, qualitative vs quantitative) and segmentation
- The marketing mix: product life cycle, pricing strategies, promotion, place
- Competition, market maps and adding value
End-of-week check: pick a product you buy and analyse its marketing mix in four paragraphs.
Week 3 โ People (human resources)
- Organisational structures: tall vs flat, span of control, delegation, centralisation
- Recruitment, selection and training
- Motivation: financial and non-financial methods, and the theories your board names
- Employment law and working patterns
End-of-week check: write a 9-mark answer recommending one motivation method for a cafรฉ.
Week 4 โ Operations and finance
- Production methods, quality (control vs assurance), stock control and suppliers
- Revenue, costs, profit and break-even analysis
- Cash flow forecasts and sources of finance
- Ratios your board requires (e.g. gross and net profit margin, average rate of return)
End-of-week check: complete three calculation questions without a formula sheet.
Week 5 โ External influences and mixed practice
- The economy: interest rates, inflation, unemployment, exchange rates
- Globalisation, ethics, the environment and technology (e-commerce)
- Your first full timed paper at the end of the week
End-of-week check: mark your paper honestly and list your three weakest topics.
Week 6 โ Exam conditions
- A second full timed paper early in the week
- Re-teach your weakest topics using active recall
- Practise only extended evaluate questions for two days โ these carry the most marks
- Final mixed review of every topic in the last two days
Adjusting the plan for your exam board
| Board | How the papers split | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| OCR J204 | Paper 1: business activity, marketing and people. Paper 2: operations, finance and influences on business. | Weeks 1โ3 cover Paper 1; weeks 4โ5 cover Paper 2. Use our OCR J204 checklist to tick off topics. |
| AQA 8132 | Paper 1: influences of operations and HRM. Paper 2: influences of marketing and finance. | Swap weeks 2 and 3 if you sit Paper 1 first. See the AQA 8132 guide. |
| Edexcel 1BS0 | Theme 1: investigating small business. Theme 2: building a business. | Weeks 1โ2 suit Theme 1; weeks 3โ5 suit Theme 2 (growth, marketing decisions, operations, finance, HR). |
Common revision mistakes to avoid
- Highlighting and re-reading instead of testing yourself.
- Leaving exam questions until the end โ application and evaluation take practice.
- Revising favourite topics and avoiding the hard ones (usually finance).
- Learning theory without examples โ every answer needs context from the case study.
- Cramming โ little and often beats long sessions the night before.
